Home sides win on Thursday

The Leaside Leafs scored in bunches in three separate innings on Thursday night at a chilly Talbot Park, and outlasted the East York Bulldogs by a 13-8 count.

The Leafs put up 4 in the fourth, 4 in the sixth, and 5 in the seventh, to finally subdue a scrappy East York effort, to win their 2012 home opener. Jorge Frugoni(1-0) was the winner in relief of starter Garrett Gilroy, who left after pitching 4 solid innings and taking a line drive to the arm in recording the last out in the fourth.

Davey Wallace was 2-4 with 3 RBI, 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases, while Bryan Rock went 3-5 with 4 RBI. Kyle Kristenbrun also had a good night, going 3-4, with 2 doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Jeff Gruchy and rookie Marc Mongillo also had 2 hits each in the Leafs victory.

Jake Gallo(0-1) made his first start of the year, and took the loss. Rookie Michael Clinton led the offense for the Bulldogs, going 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and he scored a run. Jay Douglas was 2-2, and Jack Malone went 2-5, with a triple, 2 RBI, a steal and a run. Ben Regan was also 2-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Reds stone Sox

The Thornhill Reds moved to 1-1 on the 2012 season with an 8-0 home win against the Martingrove Sox on Wednesday night.

Dave McElroy(1-0) threw five solid innings in picking up the win, allowing no hits, and striking out seven. Phil Owen, Miguel Sammy, Adam Frydman and Sherwin Ranjkesh each added an inning of relief, as the staff only gave up one hit on the night, a Ryan Fosbury ninth inning single.

Sean Pollock(0-1) was the loser, tossing three innings, and surrendering three earned runs.

Hawks beat Leafs/ Riverdogs/Redbirds score 34

The Newmarket Hawks are 2-0 on the season after a 7-6 home win against the Leaside Leafs on Tuesday night.

Adam Kallio(1-0) grabbed the win in relief of Dave MacPherson, while Nick Bubela(0-1) suffered the loss.

Kevin Holloway went 2-4 for the Hawks, scoring twice in the win. Paul Versteeg-Lytwyn had the game winning Sac fly, and Nick DeSanctis chipped in with 2 RBI.

Kyle Kristenbrun led the Leaside attack, going 2-5 with 2 RBI.

 

In Thornhill, the visiting Peterborough Riverdogs outlasted the Thornhill Redbirds, finally pulling away in the top of the eigth with a 6 spot, to win 20-14.

In a game that saw 12 combined pitchers, the Redbirds refused to lie down, and came back after trailing by 9, to tie it in the 7th at 14-14.

Tyler Plumpton(1-0) was the eventual winner, while Adam Dembe(0-1) picked up the loss, when he surrendered 5 runs in the top of the 8th, while recording just one out.

Lawson stymies Redbirds

The East York Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the young season with an impressive 8-1 home win on Monday night, on the back of an excellent pitching performance from rookie Dustin Lawson.

Lawson(1-0), went six solid innings for the win, giving up just one broken bat single, and striking out seven Redbirds. Thornhill only managed three hits on the night.

Jamal Grant hit his first home run of the year for East York, while Jack Malone had four hits and three runs scored, and Ben Anderson had four RBI.

Myles Swartz(0-1) was the loser.
